The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has informed that it would not collect garbage till the agreement reaches with local people in Nuwakot.
Director of environment section at KMC, Rabin Man Shrestha, said discussions were going on among the people’s representatives of concerned local levels, Ministry of Urban Development, and the stakeholders.
“The solid waste is not collected for three days in KMC, and it would continue so for four to five days,” he said, adding, “The locals around landfill site were pressing for their rehabilitation or stopping garbage disposal.”
He further said as the locals were piling up pressure with additional demands, garbage disposal faced hindrance.
However, Spokesperson at KMC, Nabin Manandhar, said KMC was for effective discussion to resolve problems facing the garbage disposal. “The locals have been obstructing the movement of garbage-carrying vehicles reasoning that the stench emanated from the landfill site was unbearable,” Manandhar added.
Meanwhile, Ward No 1 Chairman of Dhunibesi Municipality, Man Bahadur Tamang, insisted that they would continue obstruction until the State does not express solidarity to locals’ demands. The State must ascertain the time in which this problem will be solved, he underlined.
